WHY C.O.P.E.?
C.O.P.E. (Conquering the Obstacles of Painful Experiences) is a mental health and social service organization dedicated to transforming trauma into healing by providing culturally responsive counseling, education, and community-based wellness initiatives. We believe that painful experiences do not have to define a person's future—they can become stepping stones to resilience, purpose, and hope.
Since 2015, COPE has served more than 2,300 women, children, and families throughout the Greater Houston area through individual counseling, community workshops, educational seminars, free community stage plays, support groups, and healing events. While our services are available to all, 95% of those we serve are Black women, teen girls, and families navigating trauma, grief, anxiety, depression, life transitions, and other barriers to emotional well-being.
Our work extends beyond the counseling office into schools, churches, businesses, nonprofits, and community organizations, equipping individuals with practical, evidence-informed tools that promote emotional wellness, healthy relationships, resilience, and lasting change.
Founded by Casondra Burkley, LCSW-S, a lifelong Houstonian, and survivor of childhood poverty, homelessness, and sexual assault, COPE was born from lived experience. Casondra understands firsthand that healing is possible because she has lived the journey herself. Her story is the foundation of COPE's mission: ensuring that every person has access to compassionate support, practical resources, and a community that believes healing is possible.
At COPE, we don't just help people overcome obstacles—we help them conquer them. One woman. One teen. One family. One community at a time.
